-BILLIE JEAN (and guest Zion Taumati)
-ELLA BYE (Lucy Hiku & band)
is the solo musings of Lucy Hiku. After graduating from Jazz School Lucy has since gone on to spread her diverse styling’s around the country dabbling in pop, jazz and hip hop as well as her own soulful style. She has also been involved with Jazz and Blues Festivals and most recently as a backing vocalist for legend Mark Vanilau. You can also hear her vocal stylings on the track ‘Rain’ by popular dance act, Rare Shot Blue.
-CHARLOTTE AND THE THUMP (Charlotte Crone & band)
Fronted by current music student, Charlotte Crone, Charlotte and the Thump is a band that is sure to entertain. With members Luke Belcher, bringing out the solid bassline, Von Voin Strum’s guitarist, Kurt Fleming providing the power-house drums and fresh-faced member, Brydon Hulse screaming lines from his guitar, they are relatively new to the music scene as a group. They are all currently students of CPIT Jazz School, taking part in various bands from the compulsory, yet highly enjoyable, elective ensembles to their own projects outside of the institution. “The Thump” have recently been rehearsing together for the Dux de Lux RounDUp Band Competition and are eager to show off new material written by Charlotte as well as the odd cover of our national treasures. Prepare for a sound that twists the corners of run-of-the-mill contemporary music to suit the messages and provide a performance not to be missed.

-I AM THE LIGHT (Malisa Palalagi and band)
From ska & pop-punk to hardcore bands comes the solo project of Malisa Palalagi. Originally a bass-player, the 27 year old Christchurch native has switched to playing guitar and singing songs that can only be described as refreshing, catchy and fun. Influenced by blues, jazz, funk, rockabilly and hip hop, this up and coming act will leave you with her songs humming in your head. Having played numerous centres in New Zealand since 2008, I Am The Light will be sharing her music live to audiences overseas in 2011. A second ep is on the way with a fresh batch of new energetic songs.

Not mentioned on the poster but no less amazing, MOTHER LOVE (Mary Baycroft) will be spinning her records for some cruisy, smooth tunes between sets.

A Christchurch woman is paying tribute to her musical grandfather by bringing back to life the big-band sound.
Kate Taylor, 24, has formed a band that will perform arrangements written by grandfather Doug Kelly, 87, during his nearly 40 years as leader of the Doug Kelly Big Band.
Kelly will get the chance to hear his arrangements once again when the new big band performs tomorrow night as part of the New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Festival that started yesterday.
Taylor said two of the musicians in the new band were original members of the Kelly band. Kelly had kept his original handwritten arrangements and gave them to Taylor.
“It is a tribute to my granddad. I wouldn’t be able to do it without him,” she said.
“The big band has not really been done here in Christchurch for a while. I have got the arrangements and I have got the man still here, so why not?”
Kelly said he was looking forward to the performance.
“I think it is wonderful because she is the only one of my grandchildren who has taken on this kind of thing,” Kelly said.
“I’m looking forward to it because I haven’t had to do anything,” he said.
Kelly said the performance had been kept as a surprise.
“I didn’t know anything about it until I picked up the leaflet for the festival.”
Kelly wrote hundreds of arrangements of classics from 1949 to 1986. The band will perform at the Christchurch Jazz School from 6pm tomorrow.
